Having a nice family meal is something that many of us can take for granted. When it comes to all of life’s responsibilities; work, kids, etc., taking the time to enjoy a meal with loved ones becomes difficult at times. Family meals are perfect in order to reconnect with loved ones, and when you have growing children, it’s an important time to communicate with them. Equally as important is helping them understand how fortunate we are to enjoy this “routine” luxury – a luxury that not all of us in this country are lucky enough to enjoy.
Pasta is the kind of dish that means bringing the family together. I love how my two boys react when I tell them that pasta is on the diner menu. Both assist with stirring the sauce and my youngest loves breaking the Barilla spaghetti in half and placing it in the pot of water – it makes him feel like a big time chef! Once everything is cooking, every 2 minutes I hear “is it ready yet?” When I do let the family know it’s dinnertime, everyone is anticipating not only the delicious food, but also listening and learning from each other at the dinner table. There is one rule at our dinner table – no technology (TV, phones) just family engagement.
I recall as a young girl, all of the life lessons my mother and father would share with me over family dinners – this is something that I try to do with my two growing sons (ages 13 and 11). In my Latino culture, family meals are synonymous with togetherness and love and I am passing this tradition on to my two sons.
Dinner is a time where we connect and I truly feel it makes our family stronger. As my sons grow older, I am realizing that communicating with them is so important and the time at our dinner table provides the perfect opportunity to do so. Plus, it’s hard to leave the table when delicious Barilla pasta is served! As a family we continue to strive to “Share the Table” and you can join my family with Barilla’s “Share the Table” Movement when you share #ShareTheTable via social media. When you do, Barilla will provide the equivalent of ten meals to Feeding America.
